I’ve decided to spend the rest of my summer exploring a new thinker: Nassim Nicholas Taleb. I’ve been meaning to read him for years — I don’t think I had even had all of my children when I first read a review of The Black Swan. I don’t even remember what it said; I just remember wishing I could afford to buy the book.

Well, now I own four of his books (because it was cheaper than buying them one at a time). I’m only about thirty pages in in The Black Swan, which I am, of course, reading first. I already love it. Right now, I’m reading about the phenomenon where, as a person rises to “expert level,” they actually end up knowing less rather than more. I have my theories on why this is (I’ve noticed this, too), but we’ll see what Taleb says. He’s the expert on this, after all.

See what I did there?

Ha.

Speaking of laughing, that’s the theme of this year’s Scholé Sisters Online Local Retreats! I’m excited about this theme, but feel the need to warn you: none of us are stand up comedians, nor do any of us play one on the internet. This isn’t about us making you laugh, but rather about learning to laugh.

Or maybe laughter as a tool for the teacher?

If that sounds weird or confusing, just hold tight. We have a special summer podcast coming out that will explain more.

Cindy Rollins will be back with us this year because we think she has some great things to say about homeschooling in hard times.

Remember how I added Life Skills into my Circle Time loop this year? Ever since then, I’ve been adding books to the stack. I call this my “on deck” pile. Just this week I added another: The Social Skills Guidebook by Chris Macleod. I like that there is a whole chapter on applying these ideas to people with Asperger’s.

This month in 2018:

A good reminder if you did the Vibrant event last summer. Good ideas even if you didn’t! 🙂

This week’s links collection:

  • Italy arrests 18 for allegedly brainwashing and selling children from MSN
    • Why my children aren’t left alone, even with doctors, example 5,047. There are far too many sick people out there. Protect your babies.
    • Did I ever tell you about the dentist that wouldn’t let me go back with my kids? He was creepy, so I left without getting anyone treated, even though one child had a known cavity. I decided it wasn’t worth the risk. He later lost his license. They said he was abusive to children while they were being treated in his office.
  • Biotech and Human Identity: Emerging Worldviews 10 from Breakpoint
    • “Babies thus become a consumer commodity, and like all consumer commodities we insist on our right to choose what we want.”
  • Gohmert Responds to Undercover Video of Google Released by Project Veritas from US Congressman Louie Gohmert
    • If you’re looking for a copy of the video that was taken down by YouTube, Vimeo, and more, Congressman Gohmert uploaded it to his site and made it more permanently available. Thankful he’s not letting this all be shoved under the rug.
