We began The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey, which is the second book in the series. In O-Age-Ten’s Child Interview (part of my Flourish Charlotte Mason Homeschool Annual Review), he listed a book from this series as his favorite for the year. When pressed to explain why, he said he guessed it was just because there was so much adventure.
And indeed there is! We’ve been enjoying it — the series has proven great fun so far. There is a faulty moral system at play in the books, however. Children disobeying parents is arbitrary — it’s acceptable (even good) if the children actually mean well by it. The children caught this without me mentioning it and we had a good chat about it yesterday.

This week, I’m beating my post-convention coma by taking my kids out on our annual dates. This at least keeps me living and active, which is more than I can say for my usual approach. I’m still lethargic, but at least I’m doing more than existing-plus-laundry.
On these dates, I’m completing my Flourish Child Interview Forms, which has been great fun. Hard to believe that for my oldest this is the last time! Wah.

Today is the last day to get the bonus loop scheduling module by purchasing Put Your Homeschool on Autopilot. I think we all know this is scheduling season. If you are constantly struggling with your schedule, I highly recommend Pam’s course.

I finished A Mind for Numbers this week. Really great book — highly recommend it. I decided I wanted to discuss some of the ideas in an upcoming episode of Scholé Sisters. It was because of Ashley Woleben (from The Classical Homeschool Podcast) that I bought the book in the first place, so it seemed fitting to ask her to come on the show for the discussion. I’ve wanted to have her on for years, but I suppose “better late than never” applies here.
Wendi Capehart is also going to be on the show this season — another one who has been on my list, but not actually on the show. And we hope to have Ravi Jain back on for a second go-round. Honestly, the season is shaping up to look good!

- The important thing is his thoughts on Sen. Josh Hawley’s Ending Support for Internet Censorship Act. It sounds nice, and I’m no fan of all the problems going on with censorship on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc. BUT … I studied the Fairness Doctrine in college and I was so glad someone is bringing this up because not only do I remember how much radio improved when it was removed, but it was exactly what came to my mind when I first read about Hawley’s proposal.
- I understand what Hawley’s getting at, but I think it’s problematic. I wish I could tell you in what part of the episode this was discussed, but I wasn’t paying attention. Halfway, maybe?
- In Blow Against Planned Parenthood, Judges Rule to Let Trump Defund Abortion Clinics from The Epoch Times
- “Title X funds make up roughly 10 percent of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding. The for-profit corporation receives $500 million in taxpayer funds annually. Defunding the rest of the sum requires Congressional approval.”
- I would like to know why any for-profit business needs taxpayer funding.
