Annnd we’ve got an Advent devotional! Big thanks to Hillary for recommending it. It’s Repeat the Sounding Joy: A daily Advent devotional on Luke 1-2 by Christopher Ash. For me, the selling point was what Hillary said about it:
We also have bought Repeat the Sounding Joy by Christopher Ash (published by the Good Book Co.), which goes through Luke 1 & 2 phrase by phrase, adding a carol and prayer. That might be similar to Ferguson’s focus on the phrases in 1 Corinthians 13.
We really enjoyed Ferguson last year, so this seemed like a good fit.

We started a new read aloud: The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict by Trenton Lee Stewart. This is, as I mentioned last week, the consolation for O-Age-Eleven tolerating Emma so well. We’ve read three books by Stewart in the past and so far this one is my favorite. My big objection to Stewart has been that it feels to me like it takes him forever to introduce the problem in the story. Too many pages are spent on introducing characters, in my opinion. (This does not stop O-Age-Eleven from loving these books.) Anyhow, this title gets interesting right away. It doesn’t feel like the introduction is a hundred pages long. It’s interesting and more believable than a couple others in the series.
As a prequel, it’s most appreciated when all the other books are known. We read those aloud earlier this year, so that wasn’t an issue for us. So far, I recommend it. I think it’s great fun!

- This episode made me book the new book Becoming Whole: Why the Opposite of Poverty Isn’t the American Dream on my wishlist. They tackled the question of whether the goal in charity should be to make other people and places like us — are we supposed to be exporting America? Is that the goal? It was a very interesting conversation … and I think a very needed one.
