The CM West conference is filling up fast! If you live on or near the West Coast (ahem … the best coast … ha!), this is the Charlotte Mason conference for you! I’ve gotten to go to CM West twice now, and both times it was wonderful. Come join Celeste Cruz, Jessica Severne, Virginia Lee Rogers, and Matt and Amber Vanderpol! Topics covered include keeping notebooks, nature study and object lessons, and scouting in a Mason education. Also contemplated are Education as a Life and Mother Culture, and there will be time as well for asking questions, nature journaling and hands-on demonstrations.

If you missed my announcement on Wednesday, I’ve made a new talk recording available in the shop. If you feel like your homeschool could use a little Charlotte Mason fairy dust about now, this talk might be just the ticket.

So, who am I going to see at GHC this year? I get to speak at three of them this year! Here’s where I’ll be:

By the way, if you are a AmblesideOnline mom in California, we are still looking for volunteers to help man the AmblesideOnline booth in Ontario, so get in touch with me!

If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know I’m working on a new project:

I’ve sung the glories of the speed of write before, but this time it’s just Scripture, my notebook, and my pencil — no Bible study helps required. What you see in the photos above is my first draft. My long term plan, if all goes well, is to write out one New Testament epistle for each of my children. First John is my personal favorite, so I’m starting with that.

This month in 2011:

Wow. I completely forgot I wrote this. It was interesting to look back on what mothering was like when I had all littles. Here’s a story about my daughter.

This week’s links collection:

  • The Fragile Generation from Reason
    • “The problem is that kids learn by doing. Trip over a tree stump and you learn to look down. There’s an old saying: Prepare your child for the path, not the path for your child. We’re doing the opposite.”
  • U.S. Education Needs to Move Past Its ‘Fixation on the Bachelor’s Degree,’ Study Says from Education Week
    • We needed a study for this? All the “college for all” movement did is lower educational standards and cheapen the bachelor’s degree.
    • But … did you notice? The article assumes the definition of education is economic: Many sub-baccalaureate programs offer ‘valuable routes into the middle class.’
  • BY STARLIGHT UNDIMINISHED from First Things
    • “For without understanding nature’s metaphors of infinity, man looms far larger in his own eyes than he would in their insistent presence, and, as history shows, comes to believe not only that he is the measure of all things but the maker and judge of life, death, and everything in between. “
    • Read this article not just for its ideas, but for its beauty. ♥
  • Protestantism Is Over and the Radicals Won by Michael Horton
    • The upcoming 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation brought this article out of Michael Horton, and while I wasn’t surprised by his thoughts, the title shook me. It’s a worthy read.
    • An inside baseball article for you Protestant readers out there. 😉
