Where have you been all my life, Mr. Anno? Dawn Duran, our resident Swedish Drill aficionado, introduced me to this new author and I cannot get enough. He’s brilliant! And my children are loving him as well. I’ve bought two so far:

I am not on Instagram. Long story short, my “smart” device is not really so smart — it doesn’t even have a forward-facing camera! I’m sparing you the selfies. (And, of course, there is also my no-children’s-photos-on-the-internet policy.) BUT … there is a new Charlotte Mason Instagram group that I heard about and wanted to share with you. I asked Celeste for more information, so here’s the low-down:
Charlotte Mason IRL is a gallery of Miss Mason’s educational methods applied … in real life. Our aim is to showcase authentic CM practices, as shared from the diverse homes and hearts of our community members. It can be daunting to begin the journey of a Charlotte Mason education, but every journey begins with a single step — and that is what we hope to spread before you here: a library of experiences others are sharing about their steps on this journey. We will be sharing practical tips and inspirational ideas for authentic implementation of Miss Mason’s philosophy. Each week we will introduce a new theme concerning CM methodology; tag your response posts with #charlottemasonirl and we just might share your insights and stories with our community here! This week, I really enjoyed the latest episode from the Mortification of Spin podcast. Entitled We’re not in Kansas Anymore, Reformed theologian Carl Trueman discusses changing social mores with Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput. It was oh so good, and if you love hearing fruitful discussions between Catholics and Protestants, this is definitely for you.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to experience a different sort of use of the educational tool we call Atmosphere. If you notice, when Charlotte Mason talks about atmosphere, the idea of relationships with others or with the world is always at the forefront. This is why she rejects a contrived environment — it doesn’t allow for real relationships in the real world. We had a friend in a mini-crisis. Atmosphere as a tool can look like many things, but yesterday it looked my high schooler taking over one of the math lessons for me so that I could get ready to leave. It also looked like us leaving the house and finishing math later in the afternoon.
These are simple things, of course, but I was thinking later that this, too, is atmosphere. Learning to drop it all for someone we love? That’s a priceless lesson. I wasn’t glad someone was in need, but I was glad my children had the chance to experience the shifting of life that sometimes needs to happen.
