I actually finished some books this month! Last month was depressing because I had nothing to add to my finished list on my Mother Culture Habit Tracker. I like to think these sorts of things don’t bother me, but at the end of the month there is some regret if I have zero entries.
Anyhow, in addition to You Who, which I mentioned last week, I also finished Economics in One Lesson and The Lively Art of Writing.
Both of these are titles I’ve been reading with my oldest over the course of his eleventh grade year. Economics in One Lesson is a book I first read with Cindy Rollins in a book club many years ago. I remember thinking I’d read it with my children someday. Turns out, someday is now. That’s a sobering thought.
I’ll try to write a post soon on The Lively Art of Writing since it’s what we’ve used for writing this year. It has been the perfect fit for us.

Have you joined the Sistership yet? This new and improved version of the Scholé Sisters forum is amazing! I’m totally stoked about it, and it’s only just begun.
There are four levels. The first is the Free level — you get the social media aspect with this, with updates on everyone’s #scholeeveryday and #educationalphilosophy thoughts. I’m enjoying the stream of book stacks and interesting comments!
The second level is Basic. That’s what we’ve always done — the bonuses. Mystie’s been adding all the past bonuses, so there are a number of them now. Cutting Room Floor bonuses are usually only a few minutes — pieces trimmed from larger episodes. Some are funny, others are tangents that were interesting, but too distracting to keep in the episode (or the episode had simply gotten too long). And of course we have the Paideia Book Club, which are longer episodes in which Mystie and I discuss and you can read comment along if you like.
The third level is Leader. This gets everything in Basic, plus the ability to form and lead a private group. We’ve been wanting to do this to help support local groups. These groups work a lot like a Facebook group, but no one is collecting and selling your data. You can add local members even if they are on the Free level. You also get the How to Start a Scholé Sisters Group workshop.
The fourth level is Premier. We’re really excited about this one and have big plans for it! Premier gets everything in all the other levels, plus all sorts of goodies, including an annual T-shirt. Right now, Premier members have access to the 2017 Leading Well retreat and will be getting into the spring education seminars for free. There will be mentor-led book clubs as well, the first one with Cindy Rollins.
What are you waiting for? Go join the only social media platform created just for moms like you!

I purchased my airplane read for my AO Camp Meeting trip coming up. Esther Meek has a number of books on epistemology and Longing to Know: The Philosophy of Knowledge for Ordinary People is one of them. I was totally bummed, though. I had found a really cheap “Like New” copy. When it arrived this week, it was a mess — highlighting on almost every page, marginalia everywhere. I really didn’t want to pay full price, so after returning it to Amazon (without issue, I might add), I ordered another used copy. I hope it arrives in time! I think I’m cutting it super close.

This month in 2016:
This one was about why you don’t have to be an expert to lead a Charlotte Mason group. I still really think this:
An amateur, you see, is one who loves. Love, being the heart of true study, is where we want to begin, and something we want to remain, even when we’ve come to know a lot more than when we started. We don’t want Charlotte Mason’s philosophy professionalized and institutionalized and given its own fancy academic language and eventually becoming inaccessible to normal folk.

This week’s links collection:
- The Fraud of Higher Education from First Things
- These are some fine thoughts on the college admissions scandal.
- Of course, he had me at Plato, so there’s that.
- 2 Islamic Groups Target Nigerian Christians – 300 Killed While 72 Others Supernaturally Saved from Firing Squad from CBN News
- Horrifying: “Since February 10, there have been at least 270 people killed in Kaduna State alone.”
- We All Live in Marx’s World Now from The Gospel Coalition
- Lesson one: don’t let ANYONE tell you that everything is political.
- Lesson two: “the ninth commandment is arguably the greatest moral casualty of the world of Twitter, where half-baked slanderous insults can be fired at strangers with no risk of any personal comeback on the tweeter. The Christian Twitterverse is often embarrassing on this score, betraying both shallowness of thought and also cavalier contempt for the reputations of others.”
- I like Carl Trueman.

By the way, it’s not too late to give your kids the Student Reading Habit Trackers the coordinate with the Mother Culture Habit Tracker. One of my children in particular has really taken to it! She was the one I thought wasn’t reading enough, so it’s been interesting to watch her trying to check those boxes and fill up those “books finished” lines.
